On Pitch: the Integration and Equation of Aural and Electronic Tuning Techniques
“The importance of this contribution cannot be overemphasized. The dialogue among all tuners has been enriched by Rick’s work in advancing our understanding of tuning methods and theory. This book by Rick Baldassin will surely emerge as an important milestone along the path of discovery.”
“Rick Baldassin’s On Pitch is a modern classic in the field of piano technology. It not only codifies the tests used in aural tuning, but it relates these tests and their underlying acoustic principles to the use of electronic devices. This book belongs in the library of every serious piano technician.”
“Rick Baldassin is one of the foremost authorities on the subject of aural and electronic tuning, as well as a much sought-after lecturer in piano technology in general. On Pitch is mandatory reading for fellow piano technicians.
On Pitch Companionship DVD Volume I: Octave Types & Tests
“Rick Baldassin has taken his essential and groundbreaking On Pitch to yet a higher level with the On Pitch Companionship DVD. His already clear and concise text is now beautifully enhanced through aural demonstration and instruction. Baldassin’s DVD has given us an unprecedented tool to propel the next generation of fine tuners.”
“This audio and visual resource is an invaluable aid that will enhance and add clarity to the learning experience as the time-honored concepts and principles of On Pitch continue to be taught. Bravo!
“Wow, what a great way to shed some (aural) light on this complex topic. The On Pitch Companionship DVD removes the uncertainty of what to listen for when using test intervals to tune octaves, and the demonstrations make it immediately clear how to tune one’s ear to the relevant partials. With this DVD, the learning is made easy.
On Pitch Companionship DVD Volume II: Compromises Between Octave Types
“Rick has distilled a set of vital tuning information into a systematic, clear, and zero frills presentation that anyone can understand. His book On Pitch was groundbreaking; the DVD, with its audible examples, is a valuable companion resource because piano tuning is, in essence, all about listening. Every tuning student needs to watch this DVD, and any pro tuner with ambition, whether aural or ETD or hybrid, should know this stuff. A very impressive effort!”
“Rick demystifies some of the greatest challenges in piano tuning: when to stretch your octaves, how much to stretch them, and what makes that stretch necessary. The combination of academic theory and practical application presented here makes this an invaluable resource for anyone seeking to tune at the most refined level.”
“Rick has taken the difficult ‘gray area’ task of how and when to compromise octave types and made it very ‘black & white’ in this wonderfully done visual and aural aid! It couldn’t be any clearer!“
“Rick’s DVD is beneficial to everyone, whether you are new to aural tuning or have many years of experience. You can finally understand why octaves are stretched, or in some cases, narrowed. The filters are great listening aids, and the visuals and explanations are very helpful and clear.”
On Pitch Companionship DVD Volume III: Reasons for Octave Selection
Rick’s On Pitch series has been of great value to me personally, and is a wonderful resource to the world of Piano Technology. For decades, it has been my first suggestion to anyone asking me for study material when trying to learn and understand tuning theory. Rick makes a complex subject clear and logical, and the DVD series is going to be a new classic! If any Curriculum exists for learning to be a piano technician, this DVD should be at the top of the list.
Rick Baldassin’s On Pitch DVD offers a clear and comprehensive approach to tuning theory that simultaneously trains the mind and the ear. The beautifully executed format of graphs, keyboard display, and audible examples presents a guide to octave selection that beginners can follow at their own pace, and advanced tuners can use to expand their theoretical knowledge and refine their approach. This is essential viewing for anyone serious about tuning.
I first saw Rick present this material at the Arizona State Seminar 1983; it was a revelation to me then, and through the years he has continued to hone this series, making his logical presentation even clearer. This new DVD is a wonderful addition to an already valuable resource for PTG and all piano technicians. Once again, Rick is setting great standards for us all. All three DVDs belong in every technician’s library.
The On Pitch DVD is a good view of what really happens. Congratulations on making this quite simple and understandable.
On Pitch Companionship DVD Volume IV: Non-Octave Interval Tests
Rick Baldassin has my hearty congratulations and endorsement for this incredible body of work. There have been few DVDs explaining and demonstrating tuning theory and principles; but Rick’s “filtering” has made this so decisively clear, that the novice tuner can pinpoint even the most difficult of partials, and the veteran tuner has a decisive set of teaching tools at their fingertips. This companion DVD, as part of the set, completes a triumph in our profession.
On Pitch is the best, most concise, and most thorough explanation of the relationships of intervals and partial interactions in our field. These excellent DVDs have only expanded my own understanding and my personal gratitude for Rick’s superior efforts in this field. On Pitch is a resource that all tuners, aural and ETD, should own. As an examiner, instructor, and tuner with 40 years experience, I still find the time to re-read and watch the material that Rick has so carefully assembled and polished for our profession. Excellent. Highly recommended.
(English translation)
As a Hispanic piano technician, it has been difficult to find instructional books or videos in Spanish. The On Pitch book and DVDs are written in English that is easy to understand and contain great visuals. As a result, language is not an impediment to learning. Thanks to this work, I gained a better understanding of the tuning process that allowed me to achieve my desired RPT status. I highly recommend this magnificent series to my Spanish-speaking colleagues.
On Pitch Companionship DVD Volume V: The Baldassin-Sanderson Temperament
Two of the finest minds of our time have collaborated in devising the most unique temperament sequence to date. In this latest installment of the popular On Pitch DVD series, the brilliance of the Baldassin-Sanderson Temperament is graphically and colorfully demonstrated. Tuning by thirds and fourths only, and with no counting of beats required, a satisfying sense of logic and symmetry prevail throughout. A must-have DVD for novice and veteran alike!
After failing my RPT exam, Rick showed me how I could improve by following the interval tests outlined in the Baldassin-Sanderson Temperament. The next day I retook my exam, incorporating the steps that he suggested, and passed! I would recommend this volume of the On Pitch DVD series to anyone interested in passing the RPT exam or beautifully tuning a piano by ear.
The most challenging aspect of preparing for the PTG Tuning Exam is understanding how to tune an aural temperament. Many have met with failure as they looked for shortcuts and simplified ways to accomplish the task. The Baldassin-Sanderson Temperament is the pathway to success. This newest On Pitch DVD teaches how to get it right and avoid disappointment. I highly recommend it!
One afternoon I found Rick and my father at the “good old upright” at Inventronics working on an improved method of tuning a temperament. It was one of those moments where each person contributed one suggestion after another to make the system as logical as possible. The result of their brainstorming three decades ago was the Baldassin-Sanderson Temperament. I am pleased to see my father’s legacy perpetuated in this DVD.
Tune – Refine – Confirm: A system for Developing Aural Skills
“Even though I’ve been using an ETD for 10+ years and I feel like I can set it up really well to do a great job, I’ve always sort of felt like an imposter not knowing how to tune completely by ear. To me, this DVD is gold and exactly what I’ve been looking for since I don’t have access to an aural mentor in my area.
This is hands down the best training video on anything piano related I’ve ever seen. The built-in quizzes have been so good to slow me down and force myself to make sure I know the content. Without them, my brain would tell me I understand the concepts way too early and I’d move on with only half the knowledge. After watching this, I think I could tune a piano aurally from start to finish and do a decent job of it.”
